(3 MILES)
ABILITY RATING: More Difficult Single-track and Dirt Road
This section of trail is a technical one that connects the Centennial Trail to the Deerfield Trail system. Starting at the Centennial Trail's Deer Creek Trailhead at the top of the hills surrounding Pactola Lake , the trail drops steeply into the valley toward Silver City . I've never completed this portion of the trail to Silver City , but have instead continued on the Centennial Trail South, where it gets into some difficult riding due to fallen trees from previous snow storms. HOW TO GET THERE: From Deadwood, take Highway 385 South toward Hill City . After about 22 miles on Highway 385, you will see a buffalo farm on your right. Just past the buffalo farm is a road next to the Whispering Pines Campground. Turn right onto this road, pass the campground for about .5 miles, and the trailhead for Deer Creek will be on the right hand side of the road, about half way up the hill. This is the Centennial Trail, and the trail leads both right and left. Right will take you North toward Deadwood. Left will take you to an trail intersection about .5 miles South of crossing the road. At this intersection, you can either stay straight on the Centennial Trail that will take you down to Pactola Lake , or turn right and it will lead you down the Deerfield Trail to Silver City . |
