| ROAD #222 - SPEARFISH CANYON
ABILITY RATING AND TERRAIN TYPE: Easy - Dirt Road
Just off scenic Highway 14A in Spearfish Canyon is a beautiful, quiet dirt road for anyone looking for an easy, quiet ride in the canyons of the Northern Black Hills . With beautiful rock formations, lush greenery and abounding wildlife, this road will take you deep into the forest to hidden campgrounds, water falls and gorgeous creeks. From the canyon, this winding road will lead you through gaps in the canyon walls as it takes you up toward the higher peaks in the forest such as Old Baldy. The worst part of the climbing is right in the beginning where the road leads you up to the Roughlock Falls picnic area, where you can follow the short hiking trails down into the falls area. As you continue a few miles deeper into the forest, you'll find the Dances With Wolves film site hidden in the tall grasses to your right. By passing the film site a few miles, you'll also find both the Rod & Gun and Timon Campgrounds as well as the trailheads for the Little Spearfish Trail and Rimrock Trail) systems. HOW TO GET THERE: From I-90, Take Exit 14 at the City of Spearfish . Turn South toward the strip mall in the distance. Turn right at the stop sign and follow the service road for about 1 1/2 miles until you get to Spearfish Country Club and Golf Course. Turn left onto Highway 14A and follow 14A for approximately 15 miles until you reach the Village of Savoy . Turn right at Spearfish Canyon Resort and you will be on Road #222 |
